Using our microgreens and sprouts is a big part of the fun at the MicrogreenFarm. Here are two examples of use, one expected and another being a great discovery.
The use of our radish (kaiware) microgreens to top off some layered california sushi is what you come to expect from our wonderful microgreens. We used this dish at recent get together and it never fails to deliver both a visual and taste tour de force. Example of an ideal mix of ingredients to deliver a western take on an eastern mainstay, great definition of fusion from Hawaii.
This second example just happened as we forgot to eat some of our new wheat berry sprouts. Inadvertently left in a container in the refrigerator for over a week, the sprouts were starting to turn into grass shoots. We simply spread the shoots out in a container and added a little water and light, and look what happened! The wheatgrass is growing without any soil or mats with nutrition from just the seeds. The grass doesn't grow much and are not as robust, but to use this as a table decoration is fabulous. You can put this in any size and shape container.
Thus leading into our new MicroFarm Event Services website. We are currently building out our new Event Services company. We can supply live decorations like the grass pictured above for events and parties. Go to the website and see some examples for ideas.
Ann Wigmore based her ideas and processes on "biogenic" substances. Biogenic refers to natural sources of of vitamins, minerals, enzymes and amino acids (protein). She believed the biogenic substances coming from live natural sources transferred their life energy to your body. Also the basis of our Qi line of microgreens and now sprouts.
Our newest Qi sprout mix is comprised of mung beans and lentils. Both considered super sources of nutrition and another great source of soluble fibers. Both of our Qi mixes, mung and wheat berry, are great tasting and extremely quick sprouting. Both mixes can be ready to eat in 1-3 days including an overnight soak.
We have selected our mixes to maximize the biogenic substances available from these live selections. The following are a short list of the available highlights:
wheat berries - high in protein and soluble fiber vitamins B1 and B3; and the minerals magnesium, phosphorus, copper, manganese and selenium
mung beans - high in protein and soluble fiber, Vit A, B, C, K, Thiamin, Niacin, nutrients including: manganese, potassium, magnesium, folate, copper, zinc
lentils - High in protein very low in Saturated Fat, Cholesterol and Sodium. It is also a good source of Vitamin C, Folate and Manganese, Thiamin, Iron, Phosphorus and Copper
You can order both kits now in our store, we have available 2 seed packs per kit so you can mix and match. Our Qi Sprout kits include a reusable sprouting bag and two 4 ounce packs of organic and non GMO quality sprouting seeds.
While working with our new wheatgrass kits, I noticed that the seeds after the intial soak were starting to show the little roots peeking out. I had a single seed on my hand after spreading the seed and simply figured it might be good enough to eat. Actually it was really great to eat!
When I tasted the wheat berry, it started some research and I soon found that sprouted wheat was indeed a great food source and could be done with a minimum of time and space. Thus began the formulation of a kit that brings this wonderful source of nutrition and fun to your kitchen.
We had been sprouting some beans to go along with our microgreens (more on that later) and I figured the bag system we were using would be the best to do this with. The following pics show the bag system and growth of the wheat berries.
Our new Sprouting Wheat Berry kit is pictured below. It contains two 4oz bags of organic Non-GMO hard red wheat, sprouting bag and link to detailed instructions. Kits will be available later today in our store.
I was asked by one of our early testers about whether this sprouted wheat is gluten free. Sprouting reduces the gluten protein but does not eliminate it in the berries, so the answer is no. The sprouting does make the digestibility of the wheat easier and lessens the amount of gluten. Interestingly, once the wheat grass greens and grows that is a sign that there is no gluten. Wheatgrass is gluten free as long as it is made from grass that is 10-14 days old. Any older, the wheat starts to reform gluten in it's growing cycle.
We took some photos of trays that we recently delivered as part of a recent order. We have been supplying the Makena Resort here on Maui for almost two years with trays of our microgreens on a weekly basis. Here are a few shots of last weeks delivery.
We are planning on offering custom deliveries of our trays here on Maui. We will have more details coming soon.
Also we have a new hybrid microgreen/sprout kit being unveiled this weekend. This kit features both microgreens and sprouts with the MicroFarm to grow the microgreens and a sprouting bag to sprout seeds. Our seeds are both organic and Non-GMO so you can grow out both microgreens and sprouts with a single kit. Look for details also coming soon.
